Walking into Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a bit frightening, especially after the slew of horrendous reviews and massive amount of negative feedback flying around the web the past couple of days. I did, however, have some level of fan boy excitement still running through me so at best I was excited to see the “worst movie of the summer” as some are calling it. Boy, are they wrong.
The movie picks up several months after the last movie left us. The old Autobots are hunting down the remnants of the remaining Decepticons with the help of the American agency known as Nest, which is a Autobot and human coalition. Sam(Shia LaBeouf) goes off to college, but not before finding in his old belongings a small shard of the Allspark, which imprints in his brain the secrets of the Decepticons real goal on Earth. Sam and Michaela (Megan Fox) are dragged into the war yet again between the Autobots and Decepticons over control of a Transformer energy source known as Energon.
Most of the original cast returns including Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson. Julie White really steals the show, and most of the comedic moments as Sam’s mother Judy. John Turturro returns as Agent Simmons and really is the best actor of the troupe, but is followed by Ramon Rodriguez, Sam’s new roommate Leo who is obnoxious and was honestly my biggest complaint of the whole film. Overall the acting is mediocre but by no means do the actors take you away from the fun and excitement.
There also is an introduction of a few new Autobots and Decepticons such as the Twins and Arcee for the good guys and Devastator for the bad guys. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and the other Autobots are back to protect Earth from Megatron, who returns after a resurrection by the newcomers, Starcream, and the rest of the Decepticons.
The robots looked incredible and the sound editing was superb, making the action sequences some of the best to date. But with all of this films high points there are of course the low ones, most of my complaints coming from the plot. The story was not great, but I believe after the original films emotional and engrossing story no one was willing to settle for a plot that left little to the imagination. Having said that, I also do not think that you come to a movie like this for revelations and life changing events. There are the clichés and one very gut wrenching “please don’t do that” moment that obviously plays out. Even with the plot holes and the mediocre acting, I never found myself bored or wishing for any moment to pass. Go into this movie looking for a fun time and great action and you will walk out happy.
